Website Conversion Checklist Before You Spend on Ads — A 2026 South African Guide

A pre-ad-spend conversion checklist for South African businesses — the 12 website fixes that should be in place before a single rand goes into Google Ads or Meta Ads, and the conversion uplift each fix typically delivers.

A South African business that is about to spend its first R20,000+ per month on Google Ads or Meta Ads has a conversion problem waiting to happen if the website is not ready. Ads amplify what is already there — a great website with ads behind it scales a great business; a leaky website with ads behind it scales a leak.

This checklist is what we audit before approving any ad spend. It covers 12 website fixes that should be in place before a single rand goes into paid acquisition, with the conversion uplift each fix typically delivers.

The 12-fix pre-ad-spend checklist

In rough order of impact:

  1. HTTPS sitewide. A site that loads over HTTP or that has mixed content undermines trust and breaks conversion tracking. Every page, including checkout, account and contact. Non-negotiable.
  2. Mobile load time under 3 seconds on 4G. Test from a Johannesburg or Cape Town location on a mobile connection. A site that takes 6+ seconds to load on mobile is losing 50%+ of paid traffic before it converts.
  3. Clear value proposition in the hero. The headline, sub-headline and primary CTA communicate what the business does, who it is for, and what to do next — within 8 seconds. A confused hero is the most common conversion leak.
  4. Single primary CTA per page. One button, one form, one action. Pages with three CTAs convert worse than pages with one. The exception is the homepage, which legitimately has multiple paths.
  5. Phone number and contact options above the fold. South African buyers expect to call. The phone number should be click-to-call on mobile and visible without scrolling.
  6. Trust signals visible without scrolling. Reviews, client logos, accreditation, awards, years in business. The trust signals overcome cold-traffic scepticism.
  7. Conversion tracking working end-to-end. Google Ads conversion tracking, Meta Pixel, enhanced conversions, server-side tracking where possible. A site without accurate tracking is a site flying blind.
  8. Thank-you pages and post-conversion flow. The page after a form submission or purchase should confirm the action, set expectations, and route the user to the next step (call booking, related product, etc.).
  9. Forms as short as possible. Every form field reduces conversion rate. A 7-field form converts at roughly half the rate of a 3-field form. Only ask what you absolutely need.
  10. No navigation leaks on landing pages. Dedicated landing pages for paid traffic should hide or minimise the main site navigation. Every link away is a potential conversion loss.
  11. Schema structured data on the conversion path. Product, Offer, LocalBusiness, FAQPage schema gives the engine the data it needs for rich results. Indirect conversion lift through better SERP visibility.
  12. Privacy and POPIA compliance visible. A privacy policy, a cookie notice, and a contact consent checkbox on forms. South African buyers are increasingly cautious; visible compliance converts better than hidden compliance.

A site missing 4+ of these 12 fixes is not ready for paid acquisition. Fix the foundation first; the ads will perform better.

The expected uplift per fix

Realistic conversion uplift per fix, based on what we see across client work:

FixExpected upliftNotes
HTTPS sitewide5 to 15%Browser warnings kill conversion
Mobile load time to under 3s20 to 50%Largest single fix for mobile traffic
Clear value proposition10 to 30%Most common conversion leak
Single primary CTA5 to 20%Reduces decision paralysis
Phone number visible5 to 15%SA buyers expect to call
Trust signals visible5 to 20%Overcomes cold-traffic scepticism
Conversion tracking workingn/a (visibility, not conversion)Without it, you cannot measure the others
Thank-you pages2 to 8%Sets expectations, reduces confusion
Form length reduction10 to 50%Largest single form-related fix
Navigation hidden on landing pages5 to 30%Reduces conversion leaks
Schema structured data2 to 10%Indirect, through SERP visibility
Privacy and POPIA compliance2 to 8%South African buyer caution

The total potential uplift from fixing all 12 is typically 2x to 4x the baseline conversion rate. The actual uplift is the product of the fixes that apply to a specific site; a site that already has 8 of the 12 has less headroom than a site with 2 of the 12.

The order of operations

For a South African business about to start ad spend:

  1. Run the audit. Walk through the 12-point checklist. Mark each as pass, partial, or fail.
  2. Fix the foundation first. HTTPS, mobile load time, clear value proposition, single CTA, phone number. These five fixes deliver 60 to 70% of the total potential uplift.
  3. Fix the trust signals second. Reviews, logos, accreditation. Cold-traffic scepticism is real and these fix it.
  4. Fix the tracking third. Conversion tracking, enhanced conversions, schema. Without tracking, the rest of the work is invisible.
  5. Fix the form and post-conversion flow fourth. Form length reduction, thank-you pages, follow-up routing.
  6. Run a 30-day conversion baseline. With the foundation fixed, run a month of organic traffic or low-budget ads to establish the conversion baseline.
  7. Then scale the ad spend. With a 2x to 4x baseline conversion rate, the ad spend converts at 2x to 4x the rate it would have. Same budget, twice the leads.

A business that skips the foundation work and goes straight to ad spend is paying full price for half the conversions.

What "conversion rate" actually means in 2026

The 2026 benchmark conversion rates for South African websites:

  • B2B service site (law, accounting, consulting). 2 to 5% from organic, 1 to 3% from paid.
  • B2C service site (dental, vet, salon, fitness). 3 to 8% from organic, 2 to 5% from paid.
  • eCommerce site. 1 to 4% overall, with significant variation by category.
  • Lead magnet site (whitepaper, guide, demo request). 5 to 15% from organic, 3 to 10% from paid.

A South African business that does not know its current conversion rate is paying for ads without measuring outcomes. The first step is to install the tracking; the second step is to establish the baseline; the third step is to optimise.

The connection between conversion rate and ad cost

The math most businesses miss: a 2x improvement in conversion rate halves the cost per acquisition at the same ad spend. A business paying R200 per lead at a 2% conversion rate would pay R100 per lead at a 4% conversion rate, with the same ad budget.

The implication: conversion rate work has the same ROI as ad spend, but the work compounds (the improvement persists across campaigns) while the ad spend does not (pausing the ads stops the leads). A business that invests R30,000 in conversion rate work before spending R30,000/month on ads will outperform a business that spends R60,000/month on ads without the foundation work — and at lower ongoing cost.

FAQ

Do I need a new website before I start ad spend?

Not necessarily. A website with 8+ of the 12 checklist items in place is ready for ads. A website with 4 or fewer is not. The honest answer is usually "the existing site can be made ready" rather than "you need a rebuild."

How long does the foundation work take?

For a small business site, the 12-point checklist audit takes 1 to 2 hours. The fixes take 1 to 4 weeks depending on the scope. The conversion baseline then runs for 30 days. Total time to ad-readiness: 6 to 8 weeks.

What's the most common conversion leak you see?

Mobile load time. Most South African business sites we audit have a mobile load time of 5 to 10 seconds. Fixing that single issue typically delivers the largest single uplift.

Should I run ads while fixing the foundation?

No. Ads without a conversion-ready website scale a leak. Run ads only after the foundation work is done, then scale.

What about the website redesign conversation?

A redesign is rarely the answer. The 12-point checklist addresses conversion, not design. A 2018 website with the checklist applied often outperforms a 2026 redesign that misses the checklist.

If you are about to start ad spend and want a second opinion on whether the website is ready, send us the URL and the planned ad budget. Most conversion engagements we scope are 2 to 6 weeks of foundation work, followed by a 30-day baseline, then the ad spend scales. The conversion uplift typically pays for the foundation work inside the first month of ads.
