Calls, directions, bookings and walk-ins route through those three slots. A business that lands in the 3-pack reliably captures a disproportionate share of local demand; a business stuck at position 7 to 12 captures almost none.

What the 3-pack is and what changed in 2026
The 3-pack is the block of three business listings Google shows above the organic results for queries with local intent. The block pulls from the Google Business Profile (GBP) index, not from the website index, which is why a business can rank in the 3-pack without ranking for any organic keyword at all.
Two structural shifts changed the rules between 2022 and 2026:
- Search Generative Experience (SGE) and AI Overviews now quote the 3-pack directly. When an AI answer cites a local business, the citation is overwhelmingly drawn from the 3-pack and the surrounding map units, not from organic results. Visibility in the pack is now a prerequisite for being cited by the answer engine.
- The "open now", "in stock" and "nearby" filters became first-class ranking signals. Filter-aware queries ("accountant open now Sandton", "lawyer accepting new clients near me") return a narrower pack. A business with poor hours data, missing attributes or stale product feeds is filtered out before relevance is even considered.

- On-page and entity corroboration. The GBP business description, services and category must be supported by matching content on the linked website. Why relevance, distance and prominence are not enough on their own
The marketing slogan "relevance, distance, prominence" makes the algorithm sound like a three-way knob. In practice, the algorithm runs a filter pipeline:
- Filter out businesses with verification gaps, suspension, missing hours, missing primary category.
- Filter by the literal query string (services, attributes, open-now state).
- Apply distance and prominence as ranking signals within the filtered set.
- Re-rank using behavioural signals from the GBP listing and the linked website.

- Directions requests. A driver in the area intends to visit. Strong intent.
- Website clicks. Lower intent, higher volume — useful for branded discovery.
