Most South African web design studios will quote you a package. The shape of that package tells you a great deal about what they are actually selling. This post breaks the common tiers down so you can compare like-for-like across agencies and avoid the few traps that hide inside the language.

The typical tiers

A 2026 South African web design studio usually offers three or four pricing tiers. They map broadly like this.

TierPagesCustomisationTypical investmentBest for
Starter5–8Templated with light brand workR15,000 – R40,000Solo operator with a tight scope
Business10–20Custom design on a real design systemR45,000 – R120,000Most service businesses
Growth20–40Custom design + content + SEO foundationsR120,000 – R250,000Brands investing in search and content
Custom40+Bespoke architecture and integrationsR250,000+eCommerce, multi-location, regulated brands

Anything well below the lower band usually means a junior-led build with very little customisation. Anything well above the upper band usually means enterprise scope or significant third-party agency commissions.

What is actually inside each tier

The numbers above mean very different things depending on what is and isn't included. Read the proposal carefully.

Strategy and architecture. Even a starter-tier site benefits from a sitemap, audience definition and a one-page strategy brief before wireframes. If the package skips this, the design is being built on assumptions.

Copywriting and content. A clear split between design-and-build and copy. Some packages include a content brief and a few rounds of copy refinement; others expect your team to deliver all the words. The first is more expensive per page; the second saves money but eats senior team time.

Performance baseline. Look for a written Lighthouse target on desktop and mobile, not "fast loading." A serious studio will commit to a number.

SEO foundations. Schema markup, metadata patterns, redirects, sitemap, internal link plan. Search is rarely an "add-on" in 2026 — if it is, the build is shipping without foundations the site will need later.

Training and handover. A short editorial training session plus documentation so the team can publish without filing a ticket for every change.

Post-launch support. Most studios offer 30 to 90 days of bug fixes and copy adjustments after launch. Anything shorter should be a flag.

The hidden costs to watch for

A few common traps hide inside packaging language.

  • "Stock photography included." Stock imagery often has the wrong tone for service businesses in South Africa. Most teams end up replacing it with custom or commissioned photography at additional cost.
  • "Up to X revisions." Revisions are a normal part of design. A tight cap usually means the agency has priced tightly and will push back. An honest proposal is open about what counts as a revision versus a re-spec.
  • "Ongoing maintenance billed separately." This is normal — but pricing should be transparent per hour or per month, not a vague "from."
  • "Hosting included for 12 months." Most studios white-label hosting to keep control. Make sure you understand what happens at month 13.
  • "Free SEO audit." Often a sales device rather than a useful deliverable. The first month of work should include a real audit — not a sales tool.

How we package work at Page Panther

Our web design engagements include a written plan, a copy brief, a real SEO foundation pass, a performance target, a 30-day post-launch review and short editorial training. Typical investments sit between R45,000 and R180,000 depending on scope. We do not run template installs.

If you would like a tailored proposal, send us what is changing in the business and what is currently on the site. A first conversation costs nothing.
