SEO pricing in Johannesburg is the most-quoted and least-comparable line item in the South African digital marketing world. Almost every studio publishes a package and almost none of those packages include the same work. This guide is meant to be useful whether you end up hiring us or not — it is what we wish every South African business could read before signing a 12-month SEO retainer.

What an SEO package typically costs in Johannesburg

The numbers below are what credible studios charge for ongoing monthly retainers in the Johannesburg / Pretoria / Cape Town market in 2026. Low-ball offers exist; treat them as a signal, not as a deal.

TierMonthly retainerTypical scope
Local-lightR6,000 – R15,000Local GBP, citation cleanup, monthly reporting
BusinessR15,000 – R35,000Local + on-page + 2–4 articles/month + reporting
GrowthR35,000 – R75,000Local + topical map + 4–8 articles + technical + reporting
EnterpriseR75,000+Multi-location, regulated categories, customised programmes

Anything below R6,000 is usually either heavily templated or the agency has under-priced your engagement to win it. Anything above R75,000 is usually worth a careful conversation about scope.

What should be inside an affordable SEO retainer

The word "affordable" doesn't have to mean "thin." A useful low-cost retainer still covers the four foundations: Google Business Profile, on-page SEO, content and reporting. Anything missing one of these is a recipe for disappointment.

1. Google Business Profile and local signals. Optimisation, posts, Q&A and citation cleanup. For a single-location service business this is the single highest-leverage part of the programme.

2. On-page SEO. Metadata, schema where appropriate, internal links, content structure on the priority pages. Without this, content production is writing on a wet page.

3. Content production. At least two useful pieces of content per month — preferably based on a real topical map rather than "SEO articles." Frequency matters less than quality and topic relevance.

4. Reporting. Plain-English reporting that shows what changed, why, and what is queued for next month. Rankings are the most over-cited metric — what matters is calls, directions and qualified enquiries from organic.

The questions that sort the credible from the cheerful

A useful first conversation cuts through a lot of marketing. Six questions that work.

  • "What does the first month of work look like, before any content is published?"
  • "How many article briefs do you produce in a typical month, and who writes them?"
  • "Will I get a topical map, or a content calendar based on keywords?"
  • "How is my Google Business Profile being treated differently from every other GBP your team manages?"
  • "Do you ever stop services if they aren't working, or do you keep the retainer running regardless?"
  • "What is the team actually doing in week three — when the planning work is done and the next month's content hasn't started?"

A credible agency will answer each of these with specifics. A vendor will pivot.

Where the South African traps are

Three traps appear in Johannesburg pricing specifically.

Trap 1: GBP without on-page. Some agencies quote "local SEO" as a fixed monthly fee that is mostly GBP work, with no on-page or content. The site quietly stops ranking for the queries that drove the leads.

Trap 2: Templated content. "We will write four 500-word articles per month." That is the standard pre-packaged package. Articles are usually templated and rarely improve rankings on their own.

Trap 3: 12-month contract, no exit. A 6-month notice period is normal for senior-led retainers. A 12-month lock-in with no clause for performance is usually a sign the agency does not trust its own work.

How we run our SEO retainers

Our Local SEO programme in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Cape Town and Durban uses a base + add-on pricing model so that the engagement grows with the business rather than resetting every 12 months. The base package covers one location and one priority topic cluster; additional locations and clusters add on with a falling aged-add-on rate. Reporting is plain-English and shows map-pack presence by suburb, calls and directions from GBP, organic clicks by topic cluster, and conversions from organic.

If you want a tailored monthly proposal, send us your priority suburbs and the topics you care about. A first conversation costs nothing.
